Roubini is a tough critic of the crypto sector terming it as a facilitator of criminal activities.

Roubini Takes On Buterini In Twitter Spat

Renowned and yet controversial economist Nouriel Roubini continues to make headlines after appearing before a Senate committee to discuss cryptocurrencies. The economist who accurately predicted the 2008 economic meltdown is among the major critics of the cryptocurrency sector.

During the session, Roubini shared a number of controversial points regarding cryptos especially bitcoin. According to Roubini, cryptos were designed to assist criminals and terrorists. He opines that the world will move back to the stone age with the introduction of utility tokens.

In a Twitter rant, Roubini took a direct shot at the co-founder of Ethereum Vitalik Buterin early this month. The economist compared Buterin to a dictator.

Buterin did not take the tweet lying down, and fired back in a sarcastic manner. According to Buterin, Roubini had predicted another economic meltdown between 2018 and 2021. Following the 2008 prediction, Roubini earned the title of Dr Doom.

However, the economist is on record stating he is open to debating in person with Buterin on matters to do with cryptocurrencies. The debate was proffered by Laura Shin. She wanted the two engage each other on her podcast titled "Unchained". The podcast is entirely focused on cryptocurrencies and has gained in popularity in recent years.

Following the invite, Buterin showed interest but Roubini backed out after questioning Shin’s credentials. He termed her a pseudo-journalist who is unquestionably biased.

Following the withdrawal, Buterin responded stating that they can pick Kevin Pham to moderate the debate between the two opposing parties. The choice of Pham makes sense considering he is a big critic of Buterin. Pham is on record stating that Buterin has been working closely with the Russian authorities.

Following the debate, Arthur Hayes from Bitmex joined in. Hayes claimed he was ready to facilitate the debate by paying for all the expenses involved. He gave the option of London or New York as the possible venues for the debate. However, Roubini fired back by terming Bitmex as a scam that was involved in criminal activities.

Finally, Roubini appeared to have settled on Pham as the moderator.  He said that Pham was the best option since he appeared thuggish in nature.

At the moment, it is not clear if the debate will take place or the two were just joking. However, Twitter followers have been floating their picks for moderator in the event the debate does take place. The names of John McAfee and the Dalai Lama have also been listed as possible moderators.
